You know what’s cool? Cucumbers. You know what else is cool? Matrices.
And while we definitely think the Keanu variety are awesome as well, we’re actually talking about item matrices. Not sure what an item matrix is? Think of it as a dynamic grid that you can use to quickly find related inventory items. If you work in an industry that deals with lots of similar inventory, such as apparel, sports equipment, craft supplies, etc., then this is functionality that you should definitely have as a part of your Operational ERP software, or at least be aware of.
Let’s break this down a little further. If you own a clothing store that sells a lot of shirts, you might want to take advantage of an item matrix to make managing your inventory easier. Let’s say that you sell four different sizes of shirt in 15 different colors (which is a pretty small selection in the real world, but we’re keeping things simple for our example). That’s 60 different inventory items/SKUs that need to be managed with your software. With an item matrix, though, you only need to work with the “parent” item.
Here’s how that works: Rather than creating an entry in your Operational ERP system for a each specific type of shirt (small red, medium red, large red, extra-large red, small blue, medium blue, large blue, extra-large blue, small green, medium green…you get it), an item matrix system lets you create one parent item (shirt), then assign different aspects to the parent item (size and color). From there, the system will generate all of the inventory items for you, which saves you lots of time and helps eliminate potential errors along the way.
But the fun is only beginning. Now that you’ve set up your parent item and its associated inventory items, it’s time to put it through its paces. Let’s say you are getting ready to stock up on your shirts, and you need to fill out a purchase order with lots of inventory on it. Instead of looking up each shirt you want to add to the order one at a time, an item matrix lets you simply add the parent item to the order, then indicate the quantities of each inventory item within that parent item that need to be added to your transaction.
